Maybe it is irony that mom's favorite color was purple or that mom's birthday is always the week we march on capital with PANCAN to ask our government officials for more funding for cancer research. Whatever it is, it is why I am participating in PurpleStride. Once diagnosed at stage IV pancreatic cancer mom didn't shed a tear, she looked right at me and said other people have it worse and I'm going to dance at your wedding. My wedding was 8 months away and I had read the statistics online about pancreatic cancer...75% of people diagnosed die within a year of diagnosis. Mom's journey started with a clinical trial, the very first pancreatic cancer patient to receive this drug combination. And it worked! 8 months after diagnosis with stage IV pancreatic cancer mom danced at my wedding with low tumor markers and the spots in her liver were no where to be seen! This progress made mom eligible for surgery in Kentucky. While mom experienced several complications from surgery she continued to fight on. She made it another 10 months to September 2014. While some say unlucky, others in similar situations may say lucky that she had 18 months after diagnosis. Either way it was too short. And that is why I am striding for my mom. Please join my team in support of doubling the 5-year survival rate by 2020! We are at 8% and need to fund research to get us to 14%!
