I had no idea what "Pancreatic Cancer" really meant until my Mother was diagnosed with it in 2011. After a few google searches I was shocked and horrified seeing 5 year survival rates listed between 4-6%! My grandmother had fought cancer of a different type and had survived 26 years (as best as I can recall) and this was what I expected....and with medical advances, my Mother should beat it in no time, right? What I read was not what I was prepared to face. My mother fought hard but lost her battle in January of 2012.
After she passed away, I decided that something needed to be changed for the patients fighting these odds, and found Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. I have been a "volunteer" with the organization since then and have had opportunities to see first hand the impact they are making. I have also had the opportunity to be involved in fundraising for this cause, that I feel has played a significant part in raising awareness and making medical advances that have increased the 5 year survival rate to 9%!
There is still a LONG way to go, and I continue to fight this disease through the efforts of PanCAN. Our largest fundraiser is the Purplestride 5K run/walk which is November 16th this year. Please consider joining us at Six Flags Fiesta Texas, or donating to our team Pancan Fighters. We are fighting for all of those who will face this diagnosis in the future. For those who are survivors (especially "Uncle" John, Peter, Susan), and those who have lost their battle including Mom, Jessica and "Uncle" Weldon.
Please make a donation today and help us reach our fundraising goal!
