On November 4, 2012, Joe Merculiefcourageously participated in the Wage Hope at PurpleStride, the walk to end pancreatic cancer with family, friends, and co-workers. Twenty four days later, on November 28th, he gave up his courageous fight against pancreatic cancer.
As we near the sixth year since losing Joe, we'd love for you to join us in raising funds and awareness of pancreatic cancer, and to celebrate Joe's life, by joining his team, "Joe...lova, love, love you!" Here are some reasons why you should join us on Sunday, October 28, 2018, at the annual PurpleStride Puget Sound event:
Raise public awareness about this disease!
Pancreatic cancer is aggressive, undetectable, and often found too late to stop for most people; PANCREATIC CANCER KILLS MORE AMERICANS THAN BREAST CANCER AND HAS A FIVE-YEAR SURVIVAL RATE OF JUST 9 PERCENT. THE DISEASE IS THE THIRD LEADING CAUSE OF CANCER -RELATED DEATH, AND IT IS PROJECTED TO BECOME THE SEONCD AROUND 2020.
Pancreatic cancer is projected to move past colorectal cancer to become the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States around 2020.
At this time, there are no proven biomarkers, or clues detectable in the blood or other bodily fluids, that could indicate the presence of a pancreatic tumor, and treatment options are limited.
Not enough researchers and resources in the field.
Clinical trials don't match patient needs, & enrollment is too low.
Many doctors lack experience treating the disease.
Fewer than 20 percent of pancreatic cancer cases are diagnosed early enough for surgical intervention. Even with surgery, the disease recurs in approximately 80 percent of these patients, who die within five years of recurrence.
Since 2008, we’ve achieved a 3% increase in pancreatic cancer survival and have inspired more than 1 million people across the country to take action in the fight against pancreatic cancer.
By walking or making a donation to our team, you are supporting efforts to double survival for this deadly disease by 2020.
Please join me and team "Joe...lova, lova, lova YOU!" on Sunday, October 28, 2018, for an easy 5k walk at Magnuson Park (opening ceremonies begin at 9:10 am with 5k walk/run beginning at 9:30 a.m.). Hope to see you there! To register (or donate) click on the link below.
