Our team is raising money in support of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, in memory of loved ones who have fought, and in support of those who continue to fight pancreatic cancer.
I specifically became involved in this cause when my grandfather, Andrew Wu, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January 2013, my final semester of college. After numerous chemotherapy sessions and surgery to remove the tumor, we are all proud and grateful to say he beat the odds and is now celebrating his FIFTH (!!) year as a survivor. We have been walking/running this 5K every year since then and are proud to be joining for the fifth time.
Unfortunately, not everyone is as lucky. My father's good friend and horseback riding instructor lost her life within a few months of diagnosis to the disease just a year or two ago.
Every day this year, more than 1,200 people throughout the world will be told, "You have pancreatic cancer". That's over 400,000 diagnoses this year. Worldwide, pancreatic cancer is the seventh leading cause of cancer-related deaths; it is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and is expected to become second around 2020. Over 70 percent of patients die in the first year of diagnosis and over the course of five years, less than 9 percent of patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer are expected to survive. You can help change these statistics. By making a donation to our team, you are supporting efforts to double survival for this deadly disease by 2020. The five-year survival rate has increased by three percentage points since 2014 and is now 9 percent partially thanks to the research funding the PANCAN has been able to provide.
Please make a donation today by joining the team to run/walk/volunteer or support us in spirit and help reach our fundraising goal!
