Rafik's Soldiers Story:
Although our father, Rafik Imseitef, has found a new home in heaven, our family’s fight against pancreatic cancer has not come to an end.
In May 2015, our father was first diagnosed with stage IIb pancreatic cancer. With the love and support from family, friends, and healthcare professionals he lived a FULL life until March 26, 2017, one day after his 56th birthday. Our journey, while difficult, made our family closer and stronger than ever. Following the Whipple surgery, he committed to chemotherapy and radiation treatments for over 7-months. Our father’s appearance and physical strength were constantly changing, but his soul and smile remained bright. Fortunately, we were able to celebrate a remission in February of 2016. With the odds against us, we were in disbelief; a weight so great had lifted off of our shoulders. Soon, we all returned to our daily routines, but lived with a greater appreciation for every day we had together as a family.
On May 13, 2016, at his first 3-month check-up with the oncologist, we received news that the cancer not only returned, but also aggressively metastasized. Rather than succumbing to the cancer and all the pain it brings, he began treatment immediately. He was responding to the chemotherapy which allowed us to take the trip of my father's dream; all six of his children, ages 18-34 went on a Mediterranean Cruise. This was special to our family, not because of the locations we visited, but because we were all together, reminiscent of our childhood road trips across the U.S.
The cancer never won. Our father never accepted this terminal illness as a death sentence. He made plans. He loved. He laughed. He smiled and in the worst situations gave us a reason to smile. He gave us memories that will last forever.
We are fundraising with Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to provide families with the support and care to allow them to LIVE and FIGHT this disease. We are hoping to aid in the fight to double the survival rate by 2020. We are a family that will always wage hope, help in advancing scientific research, and strive to create hope for families fighting pancreatic cancer.
Please join Rafik's Soldiers by donating today! Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly diseases, with 71% of patients dying within the first year of diagnosis. Together we can change the statistics for pancreatic cancer!!!
