I'm raising funds in support of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network by participating in PurpleStride in memory of my friend, Michelle Petruzzi, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 36.
Among my most treasured memory of Michelle was our Thursday/Friday weekly run at the Portland Waterfront, where we would exchange our week-in-review. Through our conversations, Michelle reminded me that you can always find a "best" moment in any bad week and that there is always something good to look forward to in any given week. And when I couldn’t think of anything, she always found something, whether it’s a new brunch place, a festival in town, or a pass to a major apparel company's employee store (yes!) When I moved out to a very different part of the country, she continued to encourage me to find those things. (Photo: the last time we ran the loop together during my visit to Portland in May 2015.)
Today, I think about Michelle pretty much everyday and every time I put on my running shoes. When I review my week during my Saturday and Sunday runs, I still look for the "best" moment of the week and something to look forward to. And when I feel like giving up in the heat and the humidity of the deep South, I would sometimes look up at the sky for an inspiration to finish strong. I will always remember Michelle's positive attitude and her encouragement for me to make best out of every situation. Thank you, Michelle.
This year, more than 53,000 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a disease with 5-year survival rate of just 9%. Every day, more than 145 people will hear the news of a colleague, a family member, or a friend’s diagnosis. Pancreatic cancer is now the third-leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. By making a donation, you will be supporting efforts to double the survival rate of this disease by 2020.
