Bill's Tigers and Ginny's Angels
It has been a year, and memories of my daddy and his battle with pancreatic cancer still are heavy on my heart. This horrific disease turned my life upside down and I am still reeling from the nightmare and heartche of what this disease took from our family. Daddy fought bravely but after 3 months of chemotherapy, he left us. Fortunately, Daddy's faith was in Jesus and he is now healed and with his Heavenly Father.
Watching the toll this disease takes is heart breaking in ways only understood by those who have seen it personally. There are few warning signs, and often by the time detection occurs, it is very advanced. As we were participating in last year's Purple Stride, my best friend (who set up Bill's Tiger's for us), found out that her grandmother Ginny had been diagnosed. She lasted less than 3 weeks after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Pancreatic cancer was recently listed as the #3 most deadliest cancer, surpassing breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, for all stages of pancreatic cancer combined, the one-year relative survival rate is 20%, and the five-year rate is 6%. As our family was caring for daddy during his struggle, I was astounded to discover so many people who shared how pancreatic cancer had also affected their families. It is more common than we realize.
The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is the national leader in the fight against pancreatic cancer. They take action by advancing scientific research, advocating for increased government funding, raising awareness through national community events, and supporting patients and families with valuable information and services.
Our goal is to raise funds to Wage a War of Hope against Pancreatic Cancer!! My hope is that one day there will be advanced screening so that this disease is detected earlier and maybe that will give more chance of survival.
