When it comes to genetic and biomarker testing for pancreatic cancer, PanCAN has three simple steps to help patients and their family members take action.
- If you’re a patient, talk to your doctor right away about genetic testing, which is focused on inherited mutations, and biomarker testing, which pinpoints any changes in a tumor’s genes or proteins. These critical tests inform treatment options, as evidence shows that one out of every four pancreatic cancer patients has an alteration in their tumor that may impact which treatment may work best for them.
- If you have a parent, child or sibling with pancreatic cancer, speak with your doctor to see if you should have genetic testing for inherited risk. Complete the family history worksheet to better understand the history of cancer in your family and use it to talk to your doctor or genetic counselor about whether testing is right for you.
- PanCAN can help you start the conversation. Contact us to learn more about both genetic and biomarker testing.
PanCAN offers biomarker testing through our Know Your Tumor® precision medicine service. We can also help patients speak with their healthcare team about having testing done through the institution where they’re being treated. For genetic testing, we can help patients and families find genetic counselors in their area and answer questions related to the process.
